Happy Friday, 

Science Night a huge success
It was our best Science Night yet!  Much of its success is due to the unwavering dedication of Science teacher, Heather Farren and her team. As Heather noted, “Science Night is made possible by all the teachers, staff, students, administrators, security, custodians, parents, and exhibitors who volunteer their time to make science fun & exciting for our students.” Science Night couldn’t happen without the organizational powers of Science Night Secretary, Jodeen Gilpatrick. Science teachers volunteer countless hours planning, prepping, and safely running the hands-on science experience rooms - which were especially awesome this year!  

This year we had the Chemistry room (Lisa Harpel & Missi Chalfant), Kids’ Room (Mike Thimgan), Science Engineering & Society (SES) Room (Missi Chalfant, Lisa Harpel, Anya Keen, & Ann Ware), Ocean Room (Anne Mortimer & student teacher Lucy Capron), Physics Room (Eric Engman) and Rocket Launching (Eric Engman & Steven Erickson),  Crime Scene Room (Heather Farren & Sam Morrow), Anatomy and Sports Med (Danielle Crow & John Banaszak), Science Club (Rebecca Krueger) and Math Room (Sage Wilkirk).  We had a full night of Planetarium Shows (Lawrence Lewis), and planetarium tickets “sold out” faster than a Taylor Swift concert (and no one had to deal with TicketMaster!). Thank you to Anne Mortimer for coordinating snacks for our awesome exhibitors (and dinner for teachers)! We had assistance from Ann Ware, Alipio Terenzi, Cyrena Gilpatrick, Bonnie Schuh, Sarah Bluhm, and Ellen Fossett, as well as many other teachers who volunteered to help! Our student volunteers enthusiastically taught science to all ages.  Our maintenance staff and custodians made everything go smoothly and put everything back together so school could happen today. So many teachers offered assistance to help Science night happen.” 
 

  

Administrative Professionals Week-April 21st-27th
Administrative Professionals Week (April 21st-27th)  is a special time in schools to honor the vital role that administrative staff play in daily operations. From managing student records and coordinating schedules to providing essential support to staff, they are the backbone of the school community that ensure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. Next week is an opportunity to express our gratitude for their hard work, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the students, staff, and families they serve. 

Bus Driver Appreciation Day-April 23rd
Next week is Bus Driver Appreciation day.  Every day, our drivers (and substitute drivers!) safely transport over 4,400 children to and from school, braving inclement weather and navigating increasing traffic. They provide supervision for 20-60 children at a time, offering comfort, guidance, and celebrating their accomplishments. Our drivers are more than just drivers; they are counselors, confidants, and protectors who play a vital role in keeping all children safe. They are often the first and last face a child sees, making their job incredibly rewarding and important. We are incredibly grateful for their hard work and dedication. THANK YOU, BUS DRIVERS!

Exploring Pillar 1: Mission, Vision, and Core Values through Classroom Visits
This week, I had a chance to visit classrooms at Aspire Academy. I joined the Principal, Dr. Kecia Fox as we handed out attendance tickets where students’ names are drawn at the end of the day to earn attendance awards. This incentive program has been a great success at Aspire, and I want to thank Dr. Fox for letting me be part of this.  Great job students!  I also stopped by LaVenture Middle School and Washington Elementary.  It’s wonderful to see and hear about all the great learning going on in our schools!

 

Green and White Open
Mark your calendar for the 15th Annual Green & White Open on Friday August 16, 2024 at 1pm Avalon Golf Links in Burlington. Registration information will be sent by email in May.

TTK students visit Padilla Bay
The Madison DL TTK classes went to Padilla Bay Interpretive Center and Bay View state park as an introduction to their unit on the Salish Sea.  Students, parents and teachers were able to explore the interpretive center, which includes an aquarium with exhibits and a touch tank. They also had an opportunity to explore the beach in search of crabs and other sea life. Thank you TTK teachers, and parent volunteers!

 

Washington to host ILC Night
Washington Elementary is hosting an ILC Night, where specialists and ILC educators will create engaging activities for students to enjoy with their families. This event aims to foster teamwork among families and provide an opportunity to connect and network. ILC Night is happening  April 29th at 5pm at Washington Elementary for this special event!

LaVenture AVID students visits UW
Close to 50 LaVenture AVID students embarked on a field trip to the University of Washington last week, part of their exploration into post-high school options. Their visit to UW, a larger university in a larger city, provided a new experience for students.  Students have also had the opportunity to visit the NCTA building and Skagit Valley College last quarter. Students participated in a 90-minute college tour and finished their visit at the Husky Union Building, where they enjoyed bowling, E-sports, and Pagliacci Pizza. A big thank you to chaperones Bonnie Schuh, Ann Lackland, Ethan Brown, and Marla Quesnell!

MVHS Unified Soccer
MVHS Unified Soccer will host their first game against BEHS on Monday, April 22nd at 5:30pm.  This is a great opportunity to see the inclusivity of all students participating in sports.  If you get a chance, stop by and cheer our students on!   

Kinder Registration
Kinder Registration has begun for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year.  If you know a family who has a child turning 5 by August 31, 2024, please feel free to share this information with them. Registration packets can be filled out online here.   

Madison Elementary Dual Language program
If you would like to apply for the Madison Dual Language Program for the 2024-2025 school year, applications are available on their website. Applications are due by Friday, May 3rd, 2024 at 5:00 PM. Applications not turned in by May 3rd, may go on the waiting list. 

Safety, Security, and Technology Levy
This week we hosted the final "Safety, Security, and Technology Replacement Levy" presentation. I hope you had a chance to hear about what the replacement levy funds and supports.  If you did not get a chance and would like to learn more, you can read more about it, along with the videos and presentations we shared during the community meetings here. Superintendent Search
As we progress with the superintendent search, we're excited to announce upcoming events where we'll seek community input. Save the date for these upcoming events.  As a reminder, if you haven’t had a chance to fill out the Superintendent Profile Survey, you can find it here. We have been making efforts to get the survey out to our Latinx Spanish speaking communities to ensure their voices are heard. Please pass this along as you are able to. Thanks!

MVHS Scholarship Foundation
Did you know that the MVHS Scholarship Foundation has awarded over half a million dollars in scholarships since it was established in 1983?  This organization raises funds that go directly to MVHS students seeking AA degrees, vocational and technical school degrees, as well as four-year degrees.  This year they are awarding twelve $2,500 scholarships and would love to be able to give even more next year.  If you are interested in donating or learning how you can contribute to this foundation, click here.

• Huge kudos to Mr. Rivera’s MV Mariachi, and MV Folklorico groups.  They  had an INCREDIBLE time at Neighbors Night in the Tulips at Tulip Valley Farm! About 1,500 people attended, connected, and created a beautiful event. The Neighbors Night in the Tulips raised funds for the Helping Hands Food Bank of Skagit County. • The National Honor Society students, with support from Kiera Wright, put on a tulip competition on the west lawn at MVHS. LIA entered the competition, and luckily got 1st place (Clifford the Big Red Dog). Below  is a picture of some of the students that helped make that happen. The displays will be there all weekend so the community can get a chance to take a look at the creations that reflect children's books. This is another of the long traditions at MVHS!

Feliz viernes,

La Noche de la Ciencia fue un gran éxito
¡Fue nuestra mejor Noche de Ciencias hasta ahora! Gran parte de su éxito se debe a la dedicación inquebrantable de la profesora de ciencias Heather Farren y su equipo. Como señaló Heather, "La Noche de las Ciencias es posible gracias a todos los maestros, personal, estudiantes, administradores, seguridad, conserjes, padres y expositores que ofrecen su tiempo como voluntarios para hacer que la ciencia sea divertida y emocionante para nuestros estudiantes". La Noche de la Ciencia no podría realizarse sin los poderes organizativos de la Secretaria de la Noche de la Ciencia, Jodeen Gilpatrick. Los maestros de ciencias ofrecen innumerables horas de trabajo voluntario para planificar, preparar y administrar de manera segura las salas de experiencias científicas prácticas, ¡que fueron especialmente increíbles este año!
Este año tuvimos la sala de Química (Lisa Harpel y Missi Chalfant), la Sala de Niños (Mike Thimgan), la Sala de Ingeniería Científica y Sociedad (SES) (Missi Chalfant, Lisa Harpel, Anya Keen y Ann Ware), la Sala Océano (Anne Mortimer y estudiante de profesora Lucy Capron), sala de física (Eric Engman) y lanzamiento de cohetes (Eric Engman y Steven Erickson), sala de escena del crimen (Heather Farren y Sam Morrow), anatomía y medicina deportiva (Danielle Crow y John Banaszak), club de ciencias (Rebecca Krueger) y Sala de Matemáticas (Sage Wilkirk). Tuvimos una noche completa de espectáculos en el Planetario (Lawrence Lewis) y las entradas para el planetario se “agotaron” más rápido que un concierto de Taylor Swift (¡y nadie tuvo que lidiar con TicketMaster!). ¡Gracias a Anne Mortimer por coordinar los refrigerios para nuestros increíbles expositores (y la cena para los maestros)! Tuvimos la ayuda de Ann Ware, Alipio Terenzi, Cyrena Gilpatrick, Bonnie Schuh, Sarah Bluhm y Ellen Fossett, así como de muchos otros maestros que se ofrecieron como voluntarios para ayudar. Nuestros estudiantes voluntarios enseñaron ciencias con entusiasmo a todas las edades. Nuestro personal de mantenimiento y conserjes hicieron que todo saliera bien y recompusieron todo para que la escuela pudiera realizarse hoy. Muchos maestros ofrecieron ayuda para ayudar a que se llevara a cabo la Noche de Ciencias”.

 

Semana de Profesionales Administrativos-21-27 de abril
La Semana de los Profesionales Administrativos (del 21 al 27 de abril) es un momento especial en las escuelas para honrar el papel vital que desempeña el personal administrativo en las operaciones diarias. Desde administrar los registros de los estudiantes y coordinar los horarios hasta brindar apoyo esencial al personal, son la columna vertebral de la comunidad escolar que garantiza que todo funcione sin problemas entre bastidores. La próxima semana es una oportunidad para expresar nuestra gratitud por su arduo trabajo, dedicación y compromiso inquebrantable con los estudiantes, el personal y las familias a las que sirven.

Día de agradecimiento al conductor de autobús: 23 de abril
La próxima semana es el día de agradecimiento al conductor de autobús. Cada día, nuestros conductores (¡y conductores sustitutos!) transportan de forma segura a más de 4400 niños hacia y desde la escuela, desafiando las inclemencias del tiempo y sorteando un tráfico cada vez mayor. Proporcionan supervisión a entre 20 y 60 niños a la vez, ofreciendo consuelo, orientación y celebrando sus logros. Nuestros conductores son más que simples conductores; son consejeros, confidentes y protectores que desempeñan un papel vital para mantener seguros a todos los niños. A menudo son la primera y la última cara que ve un niño, lo que hace que su trabajo sea increíblemente gratificante e importante. Estamos increíblemente agradecidos por su arduo trabajo y dedicación. ¡GRACIAS CONDUCTORES DE AUTOBÚS!

Explorando el Pilar 1: Misión, Visión y Valores Fundamentales a través de visitas a las aulas
Esta semana tuve la oportunidad de visitar las aulas de Aspire Academy. Me uní con la directora, Dra. Kecia Fox, mientras repartíamos boletos de asistencia donde los nombres de los estudiantes se sortean al final del día para ganar premios de asistencia. Este programa de incentivos ha sido un gran éxito en Aspire y quiero agradecer al Dr. Fox por permitirme ser parte de él. ¡Buen trabajo estudiantes! También pasé por la escuela secundaria LaVenture y la primaria Washington. ¡Es maravilloso ver y escuchar todo el gran aprendizaje que se está produciendo en nuestras escuelas!

Estudiantes de TTK visitan Bahía de Padilla
Las clases de TTK de Madison DL fueron al Centro de Interpretación de Padilla Bay y al parque estatal Bay View como introducción a su unidad en el Mar de Salish. Los estudiantes, padres y maestros pudieron explorar el centro de interpretación, que incluye un acuario con exhibiciones y un tanque táctil. También tuvieron la oportunidad de explorar la playa en busca de cangrejos y otras especies marinas. ¡Gracias maestros de TTK y padres voluntarios!

Washington acogerá la Noche de la ILC
La Primaria Washington está organizando una Noche de ILC, donde especialistas y educadores de ILC crearán actividades interesantes para que los estudiantes disfruten con sus familias. Este evento tiene como objetivo fomentar el trabajo en equipo entre familias y brindar una oportunidad para conectarse y establecer contactos. ¡La Noche ILC se llevará a cabo el 29 de abril a las 5 p.m. en la Primaria Washington para este evento especial!

Estudiantes de LaVenture AVID visitan la Universidad de Washington
Cerca de 50 estudiantes de LaVenture AVID se embarcaron en una excursión a la Universidad de Washington la semana pasada, como parte de su exploración de opciones posteriores a la escuela secundaria. Su visita a la UW, una universidad más grande en una ciudad más grande, brindó una nueva experiencia para los estudiantes. Los estudiantes también tuvieron la oportunidad de visitar el edificio NCTA y Skagit Valley College el último trimestre. Los estudiantes participaron en un recorrido universitario de 90 minutos y finalizaron su visita en el Husky Union Building, donde disfrutaron de bolos, deportes electrónicos y pizza Pagliacci. ¡Muchas gracias a los acompañantes Bonnie Schuh, Ann Lackland, Ethan Brown y Marla Quesnell!

A medida que avanzamos en la búsqueda de superintendente, nos complace anunciar próximos eventos en los que buscaremos opiniones de la comunidad. Reserva la fecha para estos próximos eventos. Fundación de Becas MVHS
¿Sabía que la Fundación de Becas MVHS ha otorgado más de medio millón de dólares en becas desde su creación en 1983? Esta organización recauda fondos que van directamente a los estudiantes de MVHS que buscan títulos AA, títulos de escuelas técnicas y vocacionales, así como títulos de cuatro años. • Felicitaciones enormes a los grupos MV Mariachi y MV Folklórico del Sr. Rivera. ¡Pasaron un tiempo INCREÍBLE en la Noche de Vecinos en los Tulipanes en Tulip Valley Farm! Alrededor de 1500 personas asistieron, se conectaron y crearon un hermoso evento. La Noche de los Vecinos en los Tulipanes recaudó fondos para el Banco de Alimentos Helping Hands del condado de Skagit. Puedes leer el artículo en el Valle de Skagit Herald aqui.  

• Los estudiantes de la Sociedad Nacional de Honor, con el apoyo de Kiera Wright, organizaron una competencia de tulipanes en el jardín oeste de MVHS. LIA participó en la competencia y afortunadamente obtuvo el 1er lugar (Clifford the Big Red Dog). A continuación se muestra una imagen de algunos de los estudiantes que ayudaron a que esto sucediera. Las exhibiciones estarán allí durante todo el fin de semana para que la comunidad pueda tener la oportunidad de ver las creaciones que reflejan los libros infantiles. ¡Esta es otra de las largas tradiciones en MVHS!
