School Board Recognition Month
January marks the celebration of School Board Appreciation month, an annual occasion dedicated to expressing gratitude to our five elected Directors. During this month, we formally extend our thanks to President Larry Otos, Vice President Wendy Ragusa, Director and Legislative Rep. Laura Flores-Cailloux, Director Marissa Guerrero, and Director Griffin Uchida. Collaborating harmoniously, they work diligently to establish policies and ensure the district successfully fulfills its educational mission and goals. We deeply appreciate the dedication and commitment demonstrated by each director in serving our district. In addition, we take a moment to acknowledge our three student leaders who, as non-voting members of the school board, play a crucial role in bridging the gap between district students and the school board. Melanie Fuimaono, Parker Halgren, and Carlos Barajas, generously volunteer their time, actively participating in various district matters and fostering communication between their peers and the school board.
Exploring Pillar 1: Mission, Vision, and Core Values through Classroom Visits
This week, I had a chance to stop by classrooms at LaVenture Middle School, Centennial Elementary, and Madison Elementary. At LaVenture, I visited with students in Joel Cohen, Greg Doud, and Corrine Brechas' classroom where students were learning about our branches of government, technology, and art . At Centennial, I stopped by Dana Finch’s, Tara Mazza and Chloe Gardner’s classroom. Lastly, at Madison I visited Cristina Ashcroft and Cecilia Guzman-Marron’s classrooms where students were actively engaged in their dual language learning activities.
Upcoming Levy Initiatives
A recent board decision has given the green light to proceed with the renewal of the Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) Levy and the Tech/Safety and Security Levy. The existing levies are set to expire in December 2024, and a vote on their renewal is scheduled for February 13, 2024. MVSD collaborates with the Boys and Girls Club
As part of this collaboration, Mental and Behavioral Health specialists visit classrooms within the afterschool program to assist students in managing their emotions. This crucial partnership enables many students to engage in numerous valuable opportunities during the afterschool program. - A big thank you to the Harriet Rowley PTO team for organizing a fantastic Science on Wheels event in collaboration with the Pacific Science Center. Tammy Sutter, a member of the PTO team (pictured below), played a crucial role in securing and coordinating the two-day program centered around "Space Odyssey." The event featured an assembly, classroom workshops, interactive exhibits, and even a planetarium. We had the opportunity to visit Harriet Rowley and witness the students having a great time while gaining knowledge about space.

As part of our regular board meetings, we answer any questions that were asked on our blog. Here are this week's questions:
Q. What planning is being done to move teachers and students out of the portables? What is the timelines for that?
A. Currently portable classrooms are needed to accommodate the high school's enrollment and schedule. Constructing permanent classroom space, which would likely require passage of a capital bond, would be necessary to vacate the portables assuming no significant drop in enrollment and assuming the current schedule remains in place.
Q. What, if any timelines, are now in place for considering the proposed trimester schedule?
A. The school board has determined that the school district will explore the opportunities involved with changing the high school bell schedule. At this time, no changes will be made for the 24-25 school year.

Preguntas:
¿Qué planificación se está haciendo para sacar a los maestros y estudiantes de los portátiles? ¿Cuáles son los plazos para eso?
Actualmente se necesitan aulas portátiles para adaptarse a la inscripción y el horario de la escuela secundaria. Sería necesario construir un espacio permanente para aulas, lo que probablemente requeriría la aprobación de un bono de capital, para desalojar los salones portátiles, suponiendo que no haya una caída significativa en la inscripción y que el cronograma actual se mantenga vigente.
P. ¿Cuáles son los plazos establecidos actualmente, si es que hay alguno, para considerar el cronograma trimestral propuesto?
La junta escolar ha determinado que el distrito escolar explorará las oportunidades involucradas con el cambio del horario de campana de la escuela secundaria. En este momento, no se realizarán cambios para el año escolar 24-25.
