Exploring Pillar 1: Mission, Vision, and Core Values through Classroom Visits
This week’s classroom visits took me to Washington Elementary.  I stopped by Dawn Mayer and Tony Dabbs’ classrooms as they were working on writing activities as part of the ARC (American Reading Company) professional development day.  I also visited Centennial Elementary where I attended a meeting with the school’s ARC coach.  Next week, I plan to visit Little Mountain Elementary, Aspire Academy, and LaVenture Middle School, eager to witness more of our students' academic success.

Welcome back board members
This week the district officially welcomed the returning board members.  Dr. Laura Cailloux, Marissa Guerrero, and Griffin Uchida.  They all took an oath of office, and will serve as board members for the next four years.  Congratulations and Thank you board for volunteering your time and service to our district.  

Heritage Language Test
On November 18th, our Heritage Language Team, Veronica Gonzalez, Taisa Chuprinov, and Yesenia Moreno, proctored the Heritage Language Test.  This marks the 8th year empowering Mount Vernon School students to earn credits in their native language and the coveted OSPI Seal of Biliteracy. This year, we had a record 90 students participate, representing an impressive array of languages: 70 in Spanish, 12 in Ukrainian, 3 in Russian, 2 in Marshallese, 1 in Punjabi, 1 in Greek, and 1 in Georgian.  It's incredible to see the diversity of languages this year, making it the most linguistically rich year yet! A huge shout out to our dedicated students who showed up on a Saturday, putting in 4-6 hours of hard work. Notably, the impact goes beyond the test. The Heritage Language Test has played a significant role in boosting our graduation rate tremendously. Cheers to the power of language and academic success!  Great job students, and a big shout out to Daniel Crowley, for his technical support! 

MBMS Band Students' Excursion to WWU
Under the guidance of MBMS teacher, Andrea Brannman, about 70 middle school band students took an adventure to visit WWU for the day. They visited the concert hall, where they had an opportunity to rehearse with WWU’s director of Bands, Paul Bain. The visit included a campus tour, sectionals with WWU students, and an all-around fantastic experience!  A big thank you to Andrea for imparting the love of music to our students and providing them with an opportunity to envision the possibilities the future holds.

Embracing the Spirit of Giving!
With the generous support of community and staff contributions, Veronica Gonzalez and students Itzel Estrada & Daisy Cano kicked off the holiday season this past Saturday. Together, they brought joy and happiness to 15 families (23 MVHS students and their siblings, totaling 45 MVSD students). The team assisted these families in selecting thoughtful gifts and creating memorable moments. A big thank you to all who donated! MVHS Students Dive Into Entrepreneurship
The MVHS SLC students have been mastering the art of running a coffee shop all Spring and this semester, thanks to the help of our SLC teacher, Devin Grant! Now, they’ve opened it to ALL staff and students! If you're up for a treat, swing by the Café in the MVHS cafeteria from 8:30 am to 10:30 am.  They are offering coffee, tea, cookies, and rice krispie treats crafted by the SLC students. Great job students, and thank you Devin for your commitment to our students! 

MBMS Holds Cozy Drive Winter Fundraisers
Mount Baker MS has partnered with the MV Police Department's Integrated Outreach Services to hold a "Cozy" drive and collect warm clothing for those most in need in our community (our homeless population that this special division helps).  They are collecting gloves (lots of gloves!), socks, pants, coats, underwear, sweatshirts and sweatpants, and hand warmers. These should be new or gently used and of various adult sizes (S, M, L, XL).  If you’d like to donate, please drop off your donations to the MBMS office.  They are accepting donations through the end of school today.

MBMS Winter Band Concert
This past Tuesday the Cadet Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Band filled the MBMS gymnasium for their first concert of the year. It was great to see first-hand how they brought in the holiday season with classic tunes, Santa hats, and smiles!  A big thank you to all the staff who made this event a success, and great job students!  I am sharing a photo from that night’s event. 
 

Students Receive Vital Scholarships
At the Mariachi Festival, scholarships were presented to five MVHS seniors—Ashley Zuniga, Maritza Sanchez, Karla Estevez, Verenice Ochoa, and Dalia Carrasco. These scholarships, contributing to their higher education, were made possible through the generous contributions of Dr. Bruner, Dr. Roche, the Hillard Family, Mr. Rivera, and Dr. Vivanco. A sincere thank you for your support!

LIA students offer gift wrapping
LIA students at MVHS are offering a convenient solution for holiday gift wrapping! Stop by Thursday, December 14th, from 4-7 pm in the MVHS cafeteria, where LIA students will be available to effortlessly wrap your gifts. The service is provided on a donation basis, making it both convenient and affordable. Stop by and let the LIA students take care of your gift wrapping needs!

Stop by the Winter Market hosted by MVHS SLC classes and discover the incredible creations crafted by our students. The event will take place on December 14th from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm in the MVHS West Foyer. Don't miss the chance to explore and appreciate the unique items made by our talented students!

• Quinn Swanson broke the school record for points in a game at 47 as the Bulldogs beat Mt. Baker  88-43.  The previous record belonged to Kyle Kingshot in 2000 with 46 points.  The third most points was Tim Caviezel's 45 points in 1990.  The boys basketball team is 4-0 and ranked top 10 in the state!  Way to go team and Quinn! 
• A huge thank you to the commendable efforts of John Banaszak and his students in shaping the healthcare landscape at MVHS.  Recently, there were incidents where two Health Sciences students played pivotal roles as first responders to medical emergencies during school activities. Their ability to draw upon their training, identify choking risks, correctly position individuals to safeguard airways, and promptly seek adult assistance is truly remarkable. The swift and effective actions taken in these separate incidents are deserving of admiration.  Moreover, this is not an isolated instance of excellence. Over the years, John's Sports Medicine students have consistently demonstrated their proactive approach to student injuries in PE. With agility and expertise, they have addressed injuries by promptly wrapping, icing, and elevating limbs, often completing these measures before the nurse arrived. Such feats are undeniably impressive and deserve a resounding "Wow!"  The students, Angelina Delafuenta and Fatima Solorzano, stand as shining examples of both the skills and spirit instilled by their teacher.
• Some families may find it challenging, miss the opportunity, or unintentionally forget to sign off on reading activities with their students at home. In response to this, Mrs. Stroosma, a devoted teacher at Harriet Rowley, has taken the proactive step of reading to students who haven't received signatures on their reading logs. She intends to continue this beneficial practice every morning with our exceptional readers. A heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Stroosma for her unwavering commitment to our students – your dedication does not go unnoticed!  If you are interested in participating in this opportunity or have any questions, please reach out to Nikkie Macomber at nmacomber@mvsd320.org.
• What an incredible Mariachi Festival last Friday night! The event drew over 900 parents and family members, showcasing remarkable performances by the Mariachi and Folklorico groups from MBMS, LaVenture and the high school. Despite unexpected challenges, the students handled every curveball brilliantly. Thank you to ALL the staff, students, and families for their invaluable contributions and support. 
• Downtown Association Holiday Parade-if you had a chance to participate in this year’s Holiday Parade, thank you!  We had many staff who were part of this year’s event.  Thank you students and staff who participated.

Explorando el Pilar 1: Misión, Visión y Valores Fundamentales a través de visitas a las aulas
Las visitas a los salones de clases de esta semana me llevaron a la Escuela Primaria Washington. Pasé por las aulas de Dawn Mayer y Tony Dabbs mientras trabajaban en actividades de escritura como parte del día de desarrollo profesional de ARC (American Reading Company). También visité la Primaria Centennial donde asistí a una reunión con el entrenador ARC de la escuela. La próxima semana planeo visitar la escuela primaria Little Mountain, la academia Aspire y la escuela secundaria LaVenture, ansiosa por presenciar más éxito académico de nuestros estudiantes.

Bienvenidos nuevamente a los miembros de la junta directiva
Esta semana, el distrito dio la bienvenida oficialmente a los miembros de la junta que regresaron. Dra. Laura Cailloux, Marissa Guerrero y Griffin Uchida. Todos prestaron juramento y serán miembros de la junta directiva durante los próximos cuatro años. Prueba de lengua patrimonial
El 18 de noviembre, nuestro equipo de lenguas heredadas, Verónica González, Taisa Chuprinov y Yesenia Moreno, supervisaron la prueba de lenguas heredadas. Esto marca el octavo año que permite a los estudiantes de la Escuela Mount Vernon obtener créditos en su idioma nativo y el codiciado Sello de Alfabetización Bilingüe de OSPI. Este año, tuvimos la participación récord de 90 estudiantes, lo que representa una impresionante variedad de idiomas: 70 en español, 12 en ucraniano, 3 en ruso, 2 en marshalés, 1 en punjabi, 1 en griego y 1 en georgiano. ¡Es increíble ver la diversidad de idiomas este año, lo que lo convierte en el año con mayor riqueza lingüística hasta ahora! Un gran saludo a nuestros dedicados estudiantes que se presentaron un sábado y trabajaron duro entre 4 y 6 horas. Cabe destacar que el impacto va más allá de la prueba. El Heritage Language Test ha jugado un papel importante en aumentar enormemente nuestra tasa de graduación. ¡Salud por el poder del lenguaje y el éxito académico! ¡Buen trabajo estudiantes y un gran agradecimiento a Daniel Crowley por su soporte técnico!

Excursión de estudiantes de MBMS Band a WWU
Bajo la dirección de la maestra de MBMS, Andrea Brannman, alrededor de 70 estudiantes de banda de la escuela secundaria se aventuraron a visitar WWU por un día. Visitaron la sala de conciertos, donde tuvieron la oportunidad de ensayar con el director de bandas de WWU, Paul Bain. La visita incluyó un recorrido por el campus, sesiones seccionales con estudiantes de WWU y una experiencia fantástica en todos los sentidos. Un gran agradecimiento a Andrea por transmitir el amor por la música a nuestros estudiantes y brindarles la oportunidad de visualizar las posibilidades que les depara el futuro.

Juntos, llevaron alegría y felicidad a 15 familias (23 estudiantes de MVHS y sus hermanos, con un total de 45 estudiantes de MVSD). El equipo ayudó a estas familias a seleccionar obsequios bien pensados y crear momentos memorables. ¡Muchas gracias a todos los que donaron! ¡Los estudiantes de MVHS SLC han dominado el arte de administrar una cafetería durante toda la primavera y este semestre, gracias a la ayuda de nuestro maestro de SLC, Devin Grant! ¡Ahora lo han abierto a TODO el personal y los estudiantes! Si le apetece un capricho, pase por el Café de la cafetería de MVHS de 8:30 a. m. a 10:30 a. m. Están ofreciendo café, té, galletas y delicias de arroz krispie elaboradas por los estudiantes de SLC. ¡Buen trabajo estudiantes y gracias Devin por su compromiso con nuestros estudiantes!

MBMS organiza eventos de recaudación de fondos de invierno en Cozy Drive
Mount Baker MS se ha asociado con los Servicios de Alcance Integrados del Departamento de Policía de MV para realizar una campaña "Cozy" y recolectar ropa abrigada para los más necesitados en nuestra comunidad (nuestra población sin hogar a la que ayuda esta división especial). Están recogiendo guantes (¡muchos guantes!), calcetines, pantalones, abrigos, ropa interior, sudaderas y pantalones deportivos y calentadores de manos. Estos deben ser nuevos o poco usados y de varios tamaños para adultos (S, M, L, XL). Si desea donar, deje sus donaciones en la oficina de MBMS. Están aceptando donaciones hasta el final de clases de hoy.

Concierto de la banda de invierno de MBMS
El martes pasado, la Banda de Cadetes, la Banda de Concierto, la Banda Sinfónica y la Banda de Jazz llenaron el gimnasio de MBMS para su primer concierto del año. ¡Fue genial ver de primera mano cómo trajeron la temporada navideña con melodías clásicas, gorros de Papá Noel y sonrisas! ¡Muchas gracias a todo el personal que hizo que este evento fuera un éxito y a los estudiantes por su gran trabajo! Estoy compartiendo una foto del evento de esa noche.

Los estudiantes reciben becas vitales
En el Festival del Mariachi, se entregaron becas a cinco estudiantes del último año de MVHS: Ashley Zúñiga, Maritza Sánchez, Karla Estevez, Verenice Ochoa y Dalia Carrasco. Estas becas, que contribuyen a su educación superior, fueron posibles gracias a las generosas contribuciones del Dr. Bruner, el Dr. Roche, la familia Hillard, el Sr. Rivera y el Dr. Vivanco. ¡Un sincero agradecimiento por su apoyo!

¡Los estudiantes de LIA en MVHS ofrecen una solución conveniente para envolver regalos navideños! Pase el jueves 14 de diciembre de 4 a 7 p. m. en la cafetería de MVHS, donde los estudiantes de LIA estarán disponibles para envolver sus regalos sin esfuerzo. • Un enorme agradecimiento a los encomiables esfuerzos de John Banaszak y sus estudiantes para dar forma al panorama de la atención médica en MVHS. Recientemente, hubo incidentes en los que dos estudiantes de Ciencias de la Salud desempeñaron papeles fundamentales como socorristas en emergencias médicas durante las actividades escolares. Su capacidad para aprovechar su capacitación, identificar riesgos de asfixia, posicionar correctamente a las personas para proteger las vías respiratorias y buscar rápidamente ayuda de un adulto es verdaderamente notable. Las acciones rápidas y efectivas tomadas en estos incidentes separados son dignas de admiración. Además, éste no es un caso aislado de excelencia. A lo largo de los años, los estudiantes de Medicina Deportiva de John's han demostrado constantemente su enfoque proactivo ante las lesiones de los estudiantes en educación física. Con agilidad y experiencia, han abordado las lesiones vendando, poniendo hielo y elevando las extremidades rápidamente, y a menudo completan estas medidas antes de que llegue la enfermera. Estas hazañas son innegablemente impresionantes y merecen un rotundo "¡Guau!" Las estudiantes, Angelina Delafuenta y Fátima Solórzano, son ejemplos brillantes de las habilidades y el espíritu inculcados por su maestra.

• ¡Qué increíble Festival de Mariachi el viernes pasado por la noche! • Desfile Navideño de la Asociación del Centro: si tuvo la oportunidad de participar en el Desfile Navideño de este año, ¡gracias! Tuvimos mucho personal que fue parte del evento de este año. Gracias a los estudiantes y al personal que participaron.
