This month, let's take a moment to acknowledge National Mental Health Awareness Month. As we engage with students and families in our schools, it's essential to keep in mind that resources are readily available in our district and community.
Heat Advisory
As we approach warmer weather, and particularly, unusually high temperatures, we want to share a few recommendations and reminders:
- Drink plenty of water and avoid beverages that contain caffeine or are high in sugar.
- Ensure students are dressed appropriately for school. Wear layers so that heavy sweatshirts can be removed as the day warms up.
- Have light under layers ready for PE and recess.
Teacher Appreciation week
This week we celebrated National Teacher Appreciation Week. I hope you had an opportunity to thank a teacher for their work and dedication to our students. Last week we shared this video that Washington Elementary put together. If you didn’t get a chance to watch it, you can do so here.
National School Nurses Week
This week we also celebrate National School Nurses Week. Little Mount Elementary (LME) Literacy Night
Literacy Night at LME was a great hit. It was an honor and joy for me and Dr. O’Brien to read to students. Dr. O’Brien stated, “I just wanted to take a moment to share my gratitude and celebrate the amazing success that was Literacy Night! From pasta to bookmarks, the entire evening was lovely and literary focused. I know how much work goes into hosting such a large community event and your attention to details and collaboration through that planning and communications process was evident. You have clearly built an excitement for our literacy initiative and a love of reading this year at Little Mountain. Students and families were talking about their favorite books all evening...it goes to show how stories are such a powerful way to connect neighbors and friends.” A student testimonial video was running and it was wonderful to see the excitement and great things they said about their reading experience during the LME Literacy Night.
LaVenture Choir
Congratulations to Ms. Wulff and LVMS choir students! On Saturday, eight students represented LaVenture Middle School in the 2023 SJMEA Jr. Honor Choir at Mount Baker Middle School. They spent the day rehearsing with a guest clinician and put on a wonderful concert at the end of the day. Congratulations to this incredible group of musicians!
The Last Cuentista
This week, the district hosted the 2022 Newbery Medal and Pura Belpré Award winner, Donna Barba Higuera. Students from Jefferson Elementary, Mount Baker Middle School, and LaVenture Middle school had an opportunity to hear from the author herself. Fifth graders had time with the author during a writing workshop. This amazing event, which included the Chicano Theater’s first production debut “The Princess and the Warrior (Popocateptly Y Iztaccihuatl)” as well as Folklorico dancers, was made possible through the Mount Vernon Public Schools Foundation, the Skagit Community Foundation, Mount Vernon Public Library, and the Mount Vernon School District. I want to thank the staff who were involved in making this event possible for our students and community. Here is a short video that Jefferson Elementary teacher, Andy Bishop, created asking students what they would want to be remembered by in 300 years about our culture now.
NCTA Summer Courses for current 8th graders
NCTA will once again offer free programs in Animation, Culinary Arts, Video Game Development and more this summer! Students can earn high school credit. This program is open to our current 8th graders this summer. You can click here to learn more about the program or to sign up.
WASA Awards Ceremony
Yesterday, WASA (Washington Association of School Administrators) held its annual Awards Ceremony. This year, the winner of the Student Leadership Award was given to MVHS senior Melanie Fuimaono. WASA also honored the Mount Vernon Public Schools Foundation with the Community Leadership Award. I want to thank Mel for her dedication to our school district, and her classmates, and to the Mount Vernon Public Schools Foundation for their commitment to our students and community.
Jefferson Student Council Donates Over $400 to Local Animal Shelter
Kudos to the amazing students at Jefferson Elementary for their hard work and dedication in raising $436.37 for the local animal shelter, SPOT. This remarkable effort by the Jefferson Eagles is truly impressive and will make a positive impact on our furry friends in need. Special thanks to advisors Christena Fisher and Angela Freeman for their guidance and support in making this donation possible. Your commitment to the school and community is truly appreciated!
Great things are growing at Jefferson
Over the past three months, 4th and 5th grade students at Jefferson Elementary have been participating in an after-school maker/garden club led by teachers Monica Hodges, Chad Norman, and Roberta Carlson. Thanks to a generous grant from the Mount Vernon Public Schools Foundation, supplies and transportation have been provided to students. This Saturday, May 13, 2023, from 10:00-12:00, the students will be showcasing their creativity at Jefferson Elementary. The students will be selling a variety of handmade items such as earrings, necklaces, macramé plant hangers, art, photo cards, and more. In addition to these creative items, students will also be selling vegetables they started from seed, as well as hanging baskets that were donated as starters by Smith Gardens in Bellingham. Skagit Farmers Supply and Gardener and Bloom generously provided the potting soil for the baskets. The proceeds from this sale will support the garden and greenhouse program, which enhances the education of all K-5 students through the STEM program and after-school garden club.

- The Chamber recognized Rachel Semrau, who is a senior at Skagit Academy, as this month’s student of the month recipient. She attended their weekly lunch and had an opportunity to share about her high school career and what her plans are for the future. Great job, Rachel!

Este mes, tomemos un momento para reconocer el Mes Nacional de Concientización sobre la Salud Mental. A medida que interactuamos con los estudiantes y las familias en nuestras escuelas, es esencial tener en cuenta que los recursos están fácilmente disponibles en nuestro distrito y comunidad.
Aviso de calor
A medida que nos acercamos a un clima más cálido y, en particular, a temperaturas inusualmente altas, queremos compartir algunas recomendaciones y recordatorios:

Noche de alfabetización de Little Mount Elementary (LME)
La Noche de Alfabetización en LME fue un gran éxito. Fue un honor y una alegría para mí y para el Dr. O'Brien leerles a los estudiantes. El Dr. O'Brien declaró: “¡Solo quería tomarme un momento para compartir mi gratitud y celebrar el increíble éxito que fue la Noche de Alfabetización! Desde pasta hasta marcadores, toda la velada fue encantadora y se centró en la literatura. Sé cuánto trabajo se necesita para organizar un evento comunitario tan grande y su atención a los detalles y la colaboración a través de ese proceso de planificación y comunicación fue evidente. Claramente ha creado un entusiasmo por nuestra iniciativa de alfabetización y un amor por la lectura este año en Little Mountain. Los estudiantes y las familias hablaron sobre sus libros favoritos toda la noche... demuestra cómo las historias son una forma tan poderosa de conectar a vecinos y amigos". Se estaba ejecutando un video testimonial de los estudiantes y fue maravilloso ver la emoción y las grandes cosas que dijeron sobre su experiencia de lectura durante la Noche de Alfabetización de LME.
Coro LaVenture
¡Felicitaciones a la Sra. Wulff ya los estudiantes del coro de LVMS! El sábado, ocho estudiantes representaron a la Escuela Intermedia LaVenture en el Coro de Honor Jr. SJMEA 2023 en la Escuela Intermedia Mount Baker. Pasaron el día ensayando con un médico invitado y dieron un maravilloso concierto al final del día. ¡Felicitaciones a este increíble grupo de músicos!
La Ultima Cuentista
Esta semana, el distrito recibió a la ganadora de la Medalla Newbery 2022 y del Premio Pura Belpré, Donna Barba Higuera. Ceremonia de entrega de premios WASA
Ayer, WASA (Asociación de Administradores Escolares de Washington) celebró su Ceremonia anual de entrega de premios. Este año, el ganador del Premio al Liderazgo Estudiantil fue otorgado a Melanie Fuimaono, estudiante de último año de MVHS. WASA también honró a la Fundación de las Escuelas Públicas de Mount Vernon con el Premio al Liderazgo Comunitario. Quiero agradecer a Mel por su dedicación a nuestro distrito escolar ya sus compañeros de clase, ya la Fundación de las Escuelas Públicas de Mount Vernon por su compromiso con nuestros estudiantes y la comunidad. El Consejo Estudiantil de Jefferson dona más de $400 al refugio de animales local

Grandes cosas están creciendo en Jefferson
Durante los últimos tres meses, los estudiantes de 4.º y 5.º grado de la escuela primaria Jefferson han estado participando en un club de jardinería/fabricantes después de la escuela dirigido por los maestros Monica Hodges, Chad Norman y Roberta Carlson. Gracias a una generosa subvención de la Fundación de las Escuelas Públicas de Mount Vernon, se han proporcionado útiles y transporte a los estudiantes. Este sábado, 13 de mayo de 2023, de 10:00 a 12:00, los estudiantes mostrarán su creatividad en la Primaria Jefferson.
