This month we celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander Heritage Month along with Jewish American Heritage Month.  We value the beautiful blend of cultures that shape our country, community, and schools.  

National School Lunch Hero Day
Today, we pay tribute to the hardworking Food Service Department. Every school day, they are committed to ensuring that our students are well-fed and nourished. Their dedication and efforts are an essential part of our students' education, and we are grateful for all that they do.  

Teacher Appreciation week
During the month of May, we also celebrate National Teacher Appreciation week.  Although it was on our flip calendar this week, National Teachers Appreciation week is May 8th-12th.  As we enter into the coming week, please help us celebrate the amazing teachers in our district.  We thank all of our teachers for your dedication and contribution to our students.  If you get a chance, please take a look at this wonderful video from Washington Elementary highlighting teacher appreciation.  

National School Nurses Week

Tulip Display Contest
This week, MVHS students participated in a Tulip Display Contest.  Due to COVID, the last time this event was held was in 2019.  Students worked together to learn to harvest (top) tulips, create their design, and build beautiful murals.  A big shout out to NHS Advisor, Kiera Wright, for helping organize the return of this event.  Students all did an amazing job!  Here is an article in GoSkagit about this wonderful event.  

MV Mariachi Cinco de Mayo Concert 
The MVHS, LaVenture, and Mount Baker Middle School Mariachi Programs will take the stage at the Lincoln Theater to celebrate Cinco de Mayo on May 5th at 7 pm at the Lincoln Theater.  This event is free to the public, so be sure to check it out!  If you are not able to make it to tonight's 5 de mayo celebration, you can watch from the comfort of your home.  Here is a link to a live streaming of tonight's event. 

Mr. Rivera Washington State Music Teacher of the Year Ceremony
During the MV Mariachi Cinco de Mayo Concert on May 5th, WIAA/WMEA will present Mr. Rivera with the WIAA/WMEA Washington State Music Teacher of the Year award.  Congratulations Mr. Rivera!   

The Last Cuentista
Chad Norman, a teacher at Jefferson, has organized a fantastic literary event for Mount Vernon students. Seventh-graders from Mount Baker and LaVenture Middle Schools will attend a special presentation by Donna Barba Higuera, the winner of the 2022 Newbery Medal and Pura Belpré Award. The author will also conduct a writing workshop for fifth-graders from various schools in the district, hosted in the Skagit Valley College Commons. The President of Skagit Valley College will extend a warm welcome to the young students. Higuera will speak again at 6pm, with the evening's theme inspired by her award-winning book, The Last Cuentista, which has been acknowledged as the most distinguished American contribution to children's literature in 2022. The event will feature special presentations by MVHS Chicano Theater and Folklorico Dance students. Many thanks to Chad Norman, the Mount Vernon Public Schools Foundation, and the Skagit Community Foundation for making these events possible for our students and community.  This amazing event is taking place Tuesday, May 9th at 6pm at McIntyre Hall.  You can find more information here.  

Chicano Theater Class Play: Princess and the Warrior ( Popocateptly Y Iztaccihualt)
Next Tuesday, May 9th, the MVHS Chicano Theater Class will be performing their play The Princess and the Warrior (Popocateptly Y Iztaccihuatl) at 11 am for all the middle school 7th graders in our district and at 6 pm at McIntyre Hall,  Admission is Free to this event.  I hope to see you there! 

Students showcase artwork
Aspire Academy and Skagit Academy students are having an art show!  Student's artwork will be featured at the Mount Vernon City Library from 4-6pm on May 12th. The art on display will be Abstract and Miniature art. Be sure to check it out!  I am including a picture of that event. 

NCTA’s Kitchen Wars Fundraiser
NCTA is excited to announce the second annual Kitchen Wars and Silent Auction event, where 10 teams will compete for the title of best appetizer and mocktail. The event provides excellent opportunities for students to gain real-world experience while raising money. Don't forget to check out the silent auction, too! Jefferson STEM program receives grant 
Roberta Carlson, a teacher at Jefferson, recently submitted a grant application from Marathon Community Investment Programs. This group “invests in organizations and initiatives that have a positive impact on the communities they serve.” Roberta's grant proposal focused on acquiring enough Lego Spike Essentials kits to introduce coding to 4th and 5th graders. The result? She was awarded $6,000.00 to support STEM coding education for her students. Congratulations to Roberta on this well-deserved achievement!

Aspire Academy Students experiencing art
Aspire Academy students recently visited the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner, where they had the opportunity to explore an art gallery, view a variety of artwork, and interpret the pieces they saw. This experience was incredibly valuable for our students, and we thank the staff at Aspire Academy for making it possible.  I am sharing a couple pictures below.  

Kinder Registration
Kinder Registration has begun and the district will be hosting Kinder Roundup events. If you know a family who has a child turning 5 by August 31, 2023, please feel free to share this information with them. Here is a link to the district website for more information. • MVHS Sophomore Sydney Martinez finished 5th in Washington State for her work on an Electronic Career Portfolio, during last week’s FBLA Leadership Conference in Spokane! Sydney has now officially been invited to compete at the FBLA National Conference in Atlanta, GA in late June, where she'll represent Mount Vernon & Washington State on the national level.  Great job Sydney! 
• MB student, Miah Ortiz, took second place with her poem "Seeds for the Future" in the Skagit County Historical Museum third annual writing contest.  Great job Miah! 
• Renowned Trumpet Teacher from California State University, Northridge, Jon Lewis, gives a Shout-out to Centennial School and Students-This past week, Jon Lewis, who has played on over 500 television shows and has been featured on popular programs such as JAG and Star Trek, held a live stream discussing trumpet playing and his experience in the industry. During the stream, Centennial teacher Rene Godina requested that Jon give a shout-out to our school and students. Jon graciously agreed, and you can check out the short clip where he says hello here. Thank you to Rene for taking the initiative and providing our students with the opportunity to learn from experts in the field.

Board Meeting questions and/or public comments
Any questions we receive at the board meeting are shared and answered here. Below are the responses to this week's questions.  

Q. I would like to know why the district is able to fund 2 more admin jobs at the District Office, all while purposing to cut a whole school program? These 2 new position salaries would fully pay for this sports program, plus funds left over.
Answer: 

• The Director of Teaching, Learning and Leadership: Secondary is a replacement of two vacated positions - the Director of TLL that was vacated in July 2022 and the AVID Director position that is open due to a leave for 2023-24.
• The Asst. Director of Multilingual Education is a replacement of the TOSA position that was vacated in September 2022. It is fully funded by categorical grants, which, by law,  are not allowed to be used for athletics. 

Q. I'm asking did you cinsider [consider] the post Covid effects our students are experiencing, before you considered obligating our scholl [school] district to an extremely costly reading program?  Did you consider the social, emotional and mental health of students and staff? It seems that you've forgotten that students are NOT data points. So many of our students are suffering in ways that we have never seen before. Cutting teachers, paraeducators and classified is possibly the worst decision you can make. Our students need to feel cared for and important. With this new reading program we have teachers rushing students through the day due to the rigorous schedule. I ask, are data points really worth the risk of the social and emotional health of our students, the future of our community?
Answer: 

• The teachers who piloted and recommended the reading curriculum considered the well being of students and staff.
• Literacy and Social Emotional Learning are not mutually exclusive concepts. 
• The future of our community is also at risk if the system responsible for teaching and learning graduates illiterate community members. 

Q. Why are you hiring a 148000 admin?  Why have you not trimmed any admin?  What is the total $$ of your cuts, teachers, paras, janitorial, Bus monitors, ms athletics?
Answer:

Q. I'm wondering why all of the panelists before the board made statements that resonated from the heart, and this first "person" from the board is making zero points and filling time with nothing that matters? Will she get stopped for time?

Q. Just wondering if the certificated salaries presented in the budget included administration, or is that a separate line item not visible?

• Per the State of Washington Accounting Manual for Public School Districts, every administrator is required to have a valid administrator certificate, which also requires a valid teaching certificate. For this reason, administrator salaries are coded to “certificated salaries” along with teachers.

Concurso de exhibición de tulipanes
Esta semana, los estudiantes de MVHS participaron en un concurso de exhibición de tulipanes. Debido a COVID, la última vez que se realizó este evento fue en 2019. Los estudiantes trabajaron juntos para aprender a cosechar tulipanes (top), crear su diseño y construir hermosos murales. Un gran agradecimiento a la asesora del NHS, Kiera Wright, por ayudar a organizar el regreso de este evento. ¡Todos los estudiantes hicieron un trabajo increíble!
