Assistant Principals Week
I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for the incredible work and dedication of our Assistant Principals. Last week was Assistant Principal’s week, and our team of AP’s is truly amazing! They provide support to our staff, work with students, and foster engagement within our school community. Thank you for all that you do!

2023-24 Student & Staff Calendar
At the school board meeting on Wednesday, the board approved next year’s calendar. Thank you to the staff who worked diligently to finish the calendar for our staff and parents.  You can find the calendar on our webpage by clicking here.  As a reminder, this calendar work is separate from our ongoing exploration of our Student Focused Balanced Calendar.  

TK Students Learn About Agriculture
The TK students in our district had an opportunity to visit Ralph's Greenhouse again this year.  Martha Thornburgh shared some details about what students learned. “[Our students are] Making all kinds of connections to our Skagit Farms Unit.  Our focus has been on the contributions, ingenuity and hard work of the farmers and farm workers.  They are a big part of what makes Skagit a great place to live.  We dug in the dirt, tasted winter vegetables, climbed on tractors and fed baby goats.  This is our second year of going to the farm.”  With a grant funded by the Mount Vernon Public School’s Foundation, about 100 TK students participated in this learning experience.  A big shout out to Ray Devries at Ralph's Greenhouse, staff and students who participated, and the Mount Vernon Public School’s Foundation. I am sharing a couple pictures from Martha’s class visit.  

United States Space Force
Students in MVHS’s Kiera Wright’s math class had an opportunity to participate in a learning experience that involved math and science.  Due to inclement weather, the original December 20th event with the Tacoma based Space Force Guardian was rescheduled to February.  The Space Force Guardians is part of the DeSTEMber celebration of math and science applications in the real world.  After participating in the Zoom, Kiera’s class received a letter from Vice President Kamala Harris encouraging the students to “continue to be curious and ambitious”, and thanked our teachers for investing in helping our students grow as leaders and thinkers.  Thank you, teachers, for supporting the learning that happens every day.  I am sharing a couple pictures below.  

 
Story on Tibu
This week I received this great story from Dana Finch, teacher at Centennial Elementary. “During Black History month, Centennial Elementary second grader, Tibu Santos-Gonzalez, learned about President Barack Obama. He checked out every book in the library about the past president. Paraprofessional Bethany Keck assisted Tibu in writing a letter to President Obama. This week, Tibu received a giant envelope from President Obama with photos of the president and his family. He even received photos of the family pet. This was an exciting day for Tibu, Ms. Keck, and Mrs. Finch’s second grade students.”  I want to thank Mrs. Finch and Ms. Keck for nurturing the love of reading and learning.  Tibu is an inspiration to us, as we see the love of learning growing in him.  I am sharing a picture of Tibu below.  

Washington Elementary hosts a Multicultural Night
This week, Washington Elementary students hosted a Multicultural Night that drew a large crowd.  The event was planned and coordinated by and included booths and performances from various cultures in our school community.  I am including a link to the story that was featured on Go Skagit.  Great job team! 

SFBC Community Forums
As we continue to explore and learn about modifying the school calendar, we have scheduled four SFBC Community Forums. Last Friday we hosted our first Community Forum.  These nightly events are open to anyone, and we hope that families and students will take this opportunity to be part of these conversations. Tonight's community forum is at Madison Elementary School at 6:00 PM.  You will find all of the information on the flier here.  

Kinder Registration
Kinder Registration has begun and the district will be hosting Kinder Roundup events. If you know a family who has a child turning 5 by August 31, 2023, please feel free to share this information with them. Here is a link to the district website for more information.  

Shout Outs

• The MVHS recently held its annual basketball game pitting senior students against the staff. While we always root for the students, this year the staff took home the win with a score of 54-42! This fun event served as a reminder of our purpose – the students. We thank the MVHS staff for their participation and for fostering camaraderie among colleagues, as well as building connections with our students and families. A special thank you also goes to Mr. Sneva and Mr. Helmer for setting up the gym. Go Bulldogs!
• Last night’s Science Night was such a great success!  I had a chance to walk through and see what a great community event this is.  A special thank you to Heather Farren and ALL of our staff who helped make this happen!
• This week our district had an opportunity to host a WSSDA (Washington State School Directors’ Association) Regional Meeting.  We specifically planned this at the high school during Science Night so that regional superintendents and board members, representing districts from Snohomish, Island, Whatcom, and Skagit County - as well as from the State Board of Education, had an opportunity to walk through and see the exhibits and the community involvement in this event.  To say they were impressed would be an understatement.  Thank you MVHS for hosting, and thank you Tim Papendorf, Fernando Ibarra, Daniel Sixto Sanchez, and George Flores for their help and support in getting the meeting room ready for our regional superintendents and board members.

Board Meeting questions and/or public comments
Any questions we receive at the board meeting are shared and answered here. Below are the responses to this week's questions.  

Q: What initial numbers are being considered for staff being non renewed? 
A: As we shared during the board meeting, the number of provisional non-renewals is approximately 30-40 certificated staff members.

Q: What process will be used to identify which staff to non renew?
A:The process included a review of overall class size, funding structures and sources, needs, and content areas,

Q: When will staff be notified if they are being non renewed?
A: As was shared during the board meeting, this will occur during the week of April 24-28.

Q: I would like to know how they came to the cost of middle school athletics? Would it be possible to break it down further?
A: $65,000 - secretary pay and benefits
$170,000 - coaches stipend pay and benefits
$6,000 - equipment budget for both schools
$12,500 - transportation costs

Q: What is the district doing with the money they “save” by having unfilled positions on a DAILY basis in EVERY building??
A: Essentially, these "savings" go into the carry over to next year, which we have estimated as part of our budget process, so it has been accounted for in that regard.

Semana de los subdirectores
Quería tomarme un momento para expresar mi gratitud por el increíble trabajo y dedicación de nuestros subdirectores. ¡La semana pasada fue la semana del subdirector, y nuestro equipo de AP es realmente increíble! Brindan apoyo a nuestro personal, trabajan con los estudiantes y fomentan la participación dentro de nuestra comunidad escolar. ¡Gracias por todo lo que haces!

Calendario de estudiantes y personal 2023-24
En la reunión de la junta escolar del miércoles, la junta aprobó el calendario del próximo año. Gracias al personal que trabajó diligentemente para terminar el calendario para nuestro personal y los padres. Puede encontrar el calendario en nuestra página web haciendo clic aquí. Como recordatorio, este trabajo de calendario es independiente de nuestra exploración continua de nuestro Calendario equilibrado centrado en el estudiante.

Estudiantes de TK aprenden sobre agricultura
Los estudiantes de TK en nuestro distrito tuvieron la oportunidad de visitar Ralph's Greenhouse nuevamente este año. Martha Thornburgh compartió algunos detalles sobre lo que aprendieron los estudiantes. “[Nuestros estudiantes están] Haciendo todo tipo de conexiones con nuestra Unidad Skagit Farms. Nuestro enfoque ha estado en las contribuciones, el ingenio y el arduo trabajo de los agricultores y trabajadores agrícolas. Son una gran parte de lo que hace de Skagit un gran lugar para vivir. Cavamos en la tierra, probamos vegetales de invierno, subimos a tractores y alimentamos cabritos. Este es nuestro segundo año de ir a la granja”. Con una subvención financiada por la Fundación de las Escuelas Públicas de Mount Vernon, alrededor de 100 estudiantes de TK participaron en esta experiencia de aprendizaje. Un gran agradecimiento a Ray Devries en Ralph's Greenhouse, al personal y a los estudiantes que participaron, y a la Fundación de las Escuelas Públicas de Mount Vernon. Fuerza espacial de los Estados Unidos
Los estudiantes de la clase de matemáticas de Kiera Wright de MVHS tuvieron la oportunidad de participar en una experiencia de aprendizaje que involucró matemáticas y ciencias. Debido a las inclemencias del tiempo, el evento original del 20 de diciembre con Space Force Guardian con sede en Tacoma se reprogramó para febrero. The Space Force Guardians es parte de la celebración DeSTEMber de las aplicaciones de las matemáticas y las ciencias en el mundo real. Después de participar en Zoom, la clase de Kiera recibió una carta de la vicepresidenta Kamala Harris alentando a los estudiantes a “seguir siendo curiosos y ambiciosos”, y agradeció a nuestros maestros por invertir en ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a crecer como líderes y pensadores. Historia sobre Tibú
Esta semana recibí esta gran historia de Dana Finch, maestra de Centennial Elementary. “Durante el mes de la Historia Negra, el estudiante de segundo grado de Centennial Elementary, Tibu Santos-Gonzalez, aprendió sobre el presidente Barack Obama. Sacó todos los libros de la biblioteca sobre el ex presidente. La paraprofesional Bethany Keck ayudó a Tibu a escribir una carta al presidente Obama. Esta semana, Tibu recibió un sobre gigante del presidente Obama con fotos del presidente y su familia. Incluso recibió fotos de la mascota de la familia. Washington Elementary organiza una noche multicultural
Esta semana, los estudiantes de la Escuela Primaria Washington organizaron una Noche Multicultural que atrajo a una gran multitud. El evento fue planeado y coordinado por e incluyó puestos y presentaciones de varias culturas en nuestra comunidad escolar. Incluyo un enlace a la historia que apareció en Go Skagit. Foros de la comunidad de SFBC
A medida que continuamos explorando y aprendiendo sobre cómo modificar el calendario escolar, hemos programado cuatro foros comunitarios de SFBC. El viernes pasado organizamos nuestro primer foro comunitario. Estos eventos nocturnos están abiertos a todos, y esperamos que las familias y los estudiantes aprovechen esta oportunidad para ser parte de estas conversaciones. El foro comunitario de esta noche es en la Escuela Primaria Madison a las 6:00 p. m. Encontrarás toda la información en el volante aquí.

Registro de kínder
La inscripción para Kinder ha comenzado y el distrito organizará eventos de Kinder Roundup. Si conoce a una familia que tiene un hijo que cumplirá 5 años antes del 31 de agosto de 2023, no dude en compartir esta información con ellos. $6,000 - presupuesto de equipo para ambas escuelas
$12,500 - gastos de transporte

P: ¿Qué está haciendo el distrito con el dinero que "ahorran" al tener puestos vacantes DIARIAMENTE en CADA edificio?
R: Esencialmente, estos "ahorros" se trasladan al próximo año, que hemos estimado como parte de nuestro proceso presupuestario, por lo que se ha contabilizado en ese sentido.
